Piedmont District Perfection!
The
GW Eagles finished an improbable run to close out their regular season.
Three wins in eight days against Piedmont District
opponents---all of them blowout wins. The Eagles capped the
troika Friday night with a convincing 47-0 blanking of the Halifax
County Blue Comets.
Only
72 hours removed from their last game against Bassett, the Eagles
showed a little evidence of rust early in the first quarter. They
eventually put together a drive and scored late in the frame. The
second quarter was all Eagles. Jacoby Dixon scored to make it a
two-touchdown lead, then he found a way to score on defense. After that, the Eagles' defenders pinned their ears back and forced the Comets into bad field position. A few plays later, Jacoby scored on a magical run
to begin the rout. Zavion King later took advantage of field
position to get one of the shortest punt returns for touchdown in
recent memory.
With a 40-0 lead, the second half went quickly on
a scrolling clock and the Eagles pitched their second shutout of the
year! GW closes the regular season with a 5-1 record, including a
perfect 5-0 in Piedmont District play.
Next up, the playoffs. The Eagles are the #2 seed and will host third-seeded Pulaski County next Friday night.
