Oct. 21, 2022 --- Bassett 50 G.W. 43 (OT)

Devastating loss

No doubt about it.  This one is going to sting for some time.

The G.W. Eagles squandered a three-touchdown lead with less than seven minutes left in the game.  The Bassett Bengals forced overtime and ended up winning 50-43, ending a nine-year losing streak to the Eagles.

The Eagles stormed out of the gate, scoring on their second play of the game to take an 8-0 lead.  They added a touchdown late in the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead.

The senior-laden Bengals mounted a comeback.  With backup quarterback Elijah Stokes replacing injured started Jaricous Hairston, the Bengals returned a squib kickoff 60 yards for a score to make it 16-7.  They got to within two points with a late second quarter touchdown.  It would remain that way until halftime.  Both teams scored in the third quarter, giving G.W. a 24-21 edge at the break.

G.W. stretched the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.  They added another score four minutes later to take a 36-21 lead.  On Bassett's next series, linebacker Kaliq Hairston forced a fumble and Omarion Hairston executed the scoop-and-score, giving the Eagles a seemingly insurmountable 43-21 lead with 5:15 left.

Bassett struck quickly, scoring on the first play of their next possession to make it 43-28 with under five minutes left.  The Bengals then recovered an onside kick.  Two minutes later, they hit on another long pass to make it 43-35 with just over three minutes left.  The Eagles managed to get a first down on their next drive, but they eventually lost the ball on downs.  Bassett worked their way downfield.  On a fourth down and 15 they executed a wide receiver option pass for a thirty-yard touchdown.  The score was allowed despite the fact that the pass to the wide receiver was forward, making his pass downfield illegal.  The Bengals got a two-point conversion to tie the game a 43-43, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, Bassett scored and got an extra point.  The Eagles moved to a third-and-goal from less than a yard out.  The officials ruled that two Bridges dives fell short.
