It
was a clash of powerhouses that lived up to the hype. The G.W. Eagles
outlasted the defending 2-AA state champions of North Carolina,
knocking off the Reidsville Rams 20-19. The Rams scored first on a touchdown pass. The Eagles took the lead on their next possession with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. But the Rams had one more long touchdown pass in them, and they took a 12-8 lead into halftime. GW retook the lead in the third on a bold fourth-and-goal play from the five. Amare Word scored to give the Eagles a 14-12 lead. The Rams responded with a long drive and a re-awakened running game. Their score and conversation made it 19-14. The Eagles had one more good drive in them. It was punctuated on their first explosive play of the night. The Rams got the ball back but had to punt with two minutes left. GW ran three plays, setting up a fourth-and-one from their own 18 yard line. GW didn't have the snap the ball. The win ends GW seven-year Week One losing streak. It also halts Reidsville's 13-game winning streak dating back to last season. |
